The author
Carlos Montalvão is a professional ship model maker and a maritime historian specialized in ship building traditions.
​
He believes that ship models must be both pieces of art and objects of knowledge. So, in addition to a notable level of accuracy in therms of craftsmanship, his models combine precise nautical archaeology information with high aesthetical value.

Carlos holds a degree in Philosophy and a Master of Arts in Maritime History. He has several international publications on ship modelling and maritime history. He works as a shipmodel maker and consultant in museological issues for several institutions in Europe, the Midddle East, South America and the USA..
Carlos is currently based in Lisbon, Portugal and has several ship models on display at international maritime museums.
In the National Museum of Oman, in addition to Sultanah, there are also on display a Chinese junk from the XV and a Portuguese Caravel and Nao from the XVI, which he built as a donation from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian to the Sultanate.
